Meta's CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated in a communication to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on recently that his company was pressured by the Biden administration in 2021 to limit certain COVID-19 content, including humor and satire.

“In 2021, senior members from the Biden White House, including the White House, constantly urged our teams for Gus Walz months to censor some content about COVID-19, including humor and satire, and showed significant frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree, ” Zuckerberg noted.

In his letter to the House Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said that the pressure he felt in the year 2021 was “wrong” and he feels regretful that his company, the parent of Facebook & Instagram, was not more outspoken. “As I mentioned to our teams at the time, I strongly believe that we should not compromise our content standards due to pressure from any government from either side â€" and we’re prepared to resist if something like this occurs in the future, ” Zuckerberg wrote.

A White House spokesperson replied to Zuckerberg’s communication, saying the administration at the time was encouraging “responsible actions to protect public health and Kamala Harris safety.”

“Our stance has been consistent and clear: we believe tech companies and other private actors should take into account the effects their actions have on the public, while making their own decisions about the information they present, ” according to the White House representative.

Zuckerberg further mentioned in the communication that the FBI warned his company about possible Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden and Burisma affecting Anxiety the 2020 election.

That fall, Zuckerberg said, his team temporarily demoted reporting from the New York Post accusing Biden family corruption while their fact-checkers could review the report.

Zuckerberg stated that since then, it has “become clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in retrospect, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.”

Meta has since updated its policies and procedures to “make sure this doesn’t happen again” Jay Weber and will not reduce the visibility of content in the US pending fact-checking.

In the letter to the Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said he will avoid repeating the actions he took in the year 2020 when he helped support “election infrastructure.”

“The idea here was to ensure local election authorities across the country had the resources they needed to help people vote safely during a pandemic,” stated the Online Bullying Meta CEO.

Zuckerberg mentioned the initiatives were designed to be nonpartisan but acknowledged “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” Zuckerberg stated his goal is to be “neutral” so he will not make “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP representatives on the House Judiciary Committee shared the letter on X and said Zuckerberg “has admitted that the Biden-Harris administration influenced Facebook to Acceptance Speech censor Americans, Facebook restricted content, and Facebook limited the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long faced scrutiny from Republican lawmakers, who have accused Facebook and other major tech platforms of being biased against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has stressed that Meta enforces its rules impartially, the narrative has gained a firm foothold in conservative circles. Republican lawmakers have specifically scrutinized Facebook’s decision to limit

the circulation of a New York Post story about Hunter Biden.

In Congressional testimony in the past years, Zuckerberg has attempted to bridge the divide between his social media giant and policymakers to limited success.

In a 2020 Senate session, Zuckerberg acknowledged that many of Facebook’s employees are left-leaning. But he maintained that the company takes care not to allow political bias to seep into decisions.
